Ottawa’s duo Wotts has returned with a bang, dropping their latest single “Sinking,” a track that serves as the perfect way to cap off their year of musical experimentation. Following their EP Good People, Bad People, this new track shows these guys aren’t afraid to push the envelope and keep us guessing.

Wotts, made up of the dynamic pair Jayem and Ricky 100, has always had a knack for mixing things up, and “Sinking” is no different. Jayem, the vocal powerhouse and multi-instrumental wizard, brings an energy that’s hard to ignore. His production chops are on full display, layering the track with a killer mix of guitars, orchestral violins, and some hefty drums. Ricky 100, holding it down on bass and guitar, adds a cool twist with some twangy vibes that give a little country flavour to the mix.

“Sinking” feels like The Killers’ Sam’s Town era got into a bar fight with MGMT’s psychedelic pop, and somehow, they both won. The track starts off all innocent with some acoustic guitar, but don’t let that fool you — before you know it, you’re strapped into a musical rollercoaster that’s going off the rails in the best way possible As Jayem puts it, “We never really know where a song is going until very late in the process.” This spontaneity is exactly what makes “Sinking” so damn exciting. It zigs when you think it’s gonna zag and draws you in. Ricky’s insight into the “twangy vibes” adds another cool layer to the song.

As Wotts gears up for a promising 2025, with hints of Britpop and a whole lot of “let’s try this” attitude, Wotts is set to keep us on our toes. “This has been a hell of a journey,” Jayem reflects, it feels like they’re just warming up. “Sinking” is Wotts saying, “Hey, check out what we can do now.”

This band is that breath of fresh air we’ve been waiting for. “Sinking” shows off their gutsy approach to making tunes, and trust me, you’ll want to hop on this ride. So let those layers of sound wash over you, and get ready to be swept away by the infectious energy of Wotts.
