Seattle’s underground is cooking up something fierce, and Tether the Star is leading the charge with their blistering new single “Degeneration.” This indie-rock/art-pop trio isn’t messing around—they’ve got something to say, and they’re saying it loud.
Maëry Lanahan, the band’s powerhouse vocalist, guitarist, and keyboard wizard, is the creative engine behind this track. She also happens to be an abstract visual artist, and you can feel that artistic sensibility bleeding through every note. The song was born from a raw conversation she had with her teenage daughter about how marketing and social media eat away at our self-worth. And let me tell you, she directed that frustration into something absolutely explosive.
“Degeneration” takes direct aim at the industries that profit from making us feel like garbage. You know the ones—they turn our deepest insecurities into content and our flaws into products they can sell back to us. It’s a full-blown takedown of manufactured insecurity, and Lanahan delivers it with the kind of fire that makes you want to punch a wall (in a good way).
But she’s not going it alone. Connor Hall handles synth and keys, adding those atmospheric layers that give Tether the Star their distinctive art-pop edge. Brian DeWeese holds down the rhythm section on drums while wearing “many hats”—the guy’s clearly the glue holding this whole operation together.
If you’re in the Seattle area, mark your calendars for September 6th—Tether the Star is throwing an album release show at The Sunset Tavern. You’d be a fool to miss it.
The cover art deserves a shout-out too. Lanahan painted it herself, tying the visual and sonic elements together in a way that feels completely cohesive. This is a full artistic vision.
“Degeneration” hits hard, holds nothing back, and leaves you thinking long after the final note fades.
