You know that feeling when you find a dusty 7-inch in a bargain bin and it absolutely destroys your speakers? That’s Tabitha Zu’s “Heard It Before” – except it’s 2026, and this beast just crawled out of the grave to kick your teeth in all over again.

Originally dropped as a limited split 7-inch back in 1991 on TLF Records alongside the Homage Freaks, this debut single got lost in the fog for way too long. But now? Eira Records pulled the trigger on a digital release (out May 22, 2026), and thank somebody upstairs for that. Mixed by Derek Birkett – yeah, the dude from Flux of Pink Indians and OLI Records – this track packs a punch that’ll rattle your fillings loose. Raw. Stormy. Ethereal. All at once.

Let’s talk about the band. Tabitha Zu were part of that early ‘90s UK alternative underground – you know, the kind of crew that played over 150 shows in a single year and shared a bill with Nirvana, Public Enemy, and Nick Cave at Reading Festival in 1992. Yeah. That level. Fronted by Melanie Garside on guitar and vocals, with John Hamilton smashing the drums and Phil Stevenson holding down the bass, these three cooked up something urgent, unapologetic, and completely unfiltered.

“Heard It Before” hit No. 15 on the UK Indie Chart and got championed by NME, Sounds, and Melody Maker. And listening to it now, you get why. It starts with that restless, jittery energy – Melanie spits lines like “Don’t lie to me / Don’t lie to me / I’ve heard it before” with a sneer that could curdle milk. The lyrics cut deep: “She was alone… Hit my head against the wall / cannot see I cannot breathe.” That’s the secret sauce.

And the video? Built entirely from never-before-seen live footage and archival tour photography. No CGI garbage. Just sweat, static, and a band that could peel paint off walls while breaking your heart.

Melanie Garside went on to have a killer solo career as Maple Bee, plus bands like Vertigo Angels, Huski, and Moontwin. But Tabitha Zu? This is where the fire started. “Heard It Before” doesn’t trade in nostalgia – it cuts straight through it. You haven’t heard anything like it.
