These Canadian madmen took that sweet, syrupy synth-pop anthem from The Raccoons and raised the distortion until it screamed for mercy. And I’m here for every second of it.
Formed back in 2015 up in the Great White North, this international collective has been tearing up college radio from Canada to France, snagging FM spins across the USA, Europe, Qatar, and Latin America. They’ve even landed tracks in flicks like Commando Ninja 2 and Hellcats Revenge. But this “Run With Us” cover is their boldest move yet.
On vocals, we’ve got Hilary Beckett – and let me tell you, this woman is a chameleon. She’s been with the Swamp crew for nearly a dozen tracks, and they call her the classy lassie with the sassy chassis. That nickname fits like a leather glove.
Behind the boards and holding down the low end is Evert. This dude’s resume is wild – started in high school because his French teacher forced him into a student rock band, then bounced through Toronto eco-punks The Plague Dogs in the ’90s, switched to keys for an Emmy-nominated project with Sean Karp, and later spent five years touring Western Canada with Ballgag N’ Chain Gang. Now he’s the backbone of Swamp Music Players, producing and playing bass on almost everything they’ve put out since 2015. His fingerprints are all over this track.
Then there’s the mystery man – The Swamp Wizard on lead guitar. This guy’s a literal hermit, off the grid, no phone, no itinerary. He insisted on hauling his gear all the way to Detroit just to lay down his parts at Steve Greene’s Battle Chamber studio. That’s dedication, folks. Or insanity. Either way, it rocks.
Speaking of Steve Greene – Detroit veteran, synth wizard, and film composer who’s scored cult classics like New York Ninja. His vintage synth collection is the stuff of legends, and he brought that brooding, dark texture to “Run With Us” that gives it a whole new spine.
The original “Run With Us” was pure ’80s cheese – that closing theme from the Canadian cartoon The Raccoons that Lisa Lougheed made famous. Nostalgia central, right? But Swamp Music Players weren’t content with just a sappy rehash. They looked at other covers that leaned too hard into childhood memories and said, “Nah, we’re going darker.” Evert, who actually witnessed the Toronto scene back in the day, wanted to capture that cold-shoulder energy of peak MTV and MuchMusic – when synth-pop had teeth and ambition, not just fuzzy feelings.
If you’re a Gen X or elder Millennial Canadian, this will hit you right in the gut. But even if you’ve never heard of The Raccoons, the sheer energy and craftsmanship here will grab you. It’s radio-friendly (FCC approved, baby), but it’s got enough edge to satisfy the headbangers.
This collective is a growing concern, and with releases like this, they’re not slowing down anytime soon. These swamp dwellers just proved that nostalgia doesn’t have to be soft – it can kick your ass.
