Ruff Hunter isn’t kidding. With “Punching Darts,” the ex-Polar Boys frontman tears into his solo era with a track that’s equally gasoline and matchstick—a collision of post-punk snarl, shoegaze haze, and lo-fi rebellion. This isn’t some safe, nostalgia-soaked side project; it’s proving Hunter’s got more than just a legacy with The Polar Boys (millions of streams, Gus Oberg collaborations, relentless tours) in his back pocket. He’s got rage, reflection, and a riff-laden gut-punch that’ll leave you buzzing.
Co-written with longtime wingman Lolo, “Punching Darts” is a masterclass. You can feel the burn in every riff, every snarled lyric. It’s like Hunter and his buddy Lolo bottled up all their angst and let it explode. One second Hunter sounds cool as ice, the next he’s screaming his guts out. It’s a ride through a messed-up mind, full of hazy memories and “what the hell am I doing with my life” vibes. Imagine this: Kurt Cobain rises from the grave, hijacks a Strokes show, and invites David Byrne for some weird art-punk jam session. That’s the vibe we’re talking about. The guitars sound like they’re trying to claw their way out of your speakers, while the drums and bass feel like they might fall apart any second – but in the best way ever.
Hunter’s lyrics don’t hand you metaphors on a silver platter. Instead, he captures that weird feeling of being stuck in emotional no-man’s-land – you know, when life feels like a skipping CD and you suddenly realize time’s flying by. He puts it pretty bluntly: “It’s about the weight of knowing nothing lasts,” about time spent with loved ones. And you can hear that raw feeling in every fuzzy guitar chord. Gus Oberg (who’s a pretty big deal himself) produced the track, and man, he walks a tightrope with it.
Now based in Canberra, Australia, he’s trading The Polar Boys’ polished anthems for something darker, messier, and infinitely more compelling. “Punching Darts” is music that doesn’t fit in a neat little box. It’s giving the middle finger to what you’d expect and a big bear hug to anyone who’s ever felt lost. If this is Ruff Hunter’s solo flight, consider us strapped in for the turbulence.
The EP’s coming—consider this your warning shot.
