Pisgah brings a stormer of a track that rewires your nervous system. “Bend to Break,” the third single from her album Faultlines, balances alt-rock ferocity with the haunting soul of Americana. This is a front-seat ride through the thunderheads of heartbreak and self-reclamation.
The project of Southern American-born musician Brittney Jenkins, now holding it down in Greater London, Pisgah draws from a deep and moody well of inspiration. “Bend to Break” is built on a foundation of lush, swelling guitars that creep in like a gathering storm before absolutely detonating over thunderous, cathartic drums. The arrangement is all tension and release, a sonic metaphor for the very breaking point the lyrics describe.
And what lyrics they are. This track goes into the complex, messy truth of realizing you’ve been living a life scripted by someone else. It’s about that pivotal moment of collapse—a mix of pure devastation and the shocking, unexpected freedom that follows. Lines like “How light the leaving feels and how much heavier the weight that finally pushed you out the door” are lead-weight realizations set to a roaring soundtrack. Jenkins reveals the song is partially her directing her parents’ pre-divorce emotions and partially her own story of putting an ocean between herself and her roots.
Recorded in her home studio and sharpened to a lethal point by Austin producer Dan Duszynski, the track is a powerful display of an artist in full command of her vision.
“Bend to Break” sets a high bar for Faultlines, making the album’s delay until December 4th feel like an agonizing wait. Pisgah is mapping faultlines of the human spirit, and we’re lucky to be along for the quake.
