Birmingham-based post-punk rockers Mutes released their latest single Televangelist on February 16th, 2024. This will be the fourth track from their upcoming album ‘…buried where you stand’ which is set to release in May of 2024. Televangelist is a noise-rock meditation, a post-everything sludge of guitar wizardry a la Sonic Youth. The song was recorded entirely live as a three-piece with Mark Gittins at Megatone Studios, which added to its larger-than-life feel. Almost as if the listener is transported to a rock cathedral where the altar was replaced by amplifiers and pedals, chained together with their dials at full turn.
The band describes the song as: “Theological projections of an irresolute agnostic; torn between clinging to the assuaging hand of statism and laying waste to internalised idolatry. Catholic guilt is one hell of a trip.” Mutes has rejected the Televangelist, seeing through their misdeeds and blowing through the facade of their doctrine. The band cleanses themselves of this old religion by dousing it with hellfire, as depicted both in the cover art and the scorching riffs they’ve ignited out of their guitars. Underneath its motorik beat is the agnostic phoenix of being born anew, baptized in a sludge of rock. Mutes have ridden themselves of their existential crisis by forging themselves anew.
