Cleveland’s mysterious duo, Lücid Lovers, crash onto the scene with a cover that’s anything but polite homage. Their take on “Obsession” – originally penned by Holly Knight and Michael Des Barres and blasted into the mainstream by Animation – is a raw, reinvigorated monster which dropped on July 25th, 2025.

Comprising the cryptically-named The High Priestess and The Hierophant, Lücid Lovers aren’t your average band. They brand themselves as lovers traversing both our world and the Astral Plane, spreading “positivity and love through vibrations tuned to the frequency of passion.” On “Obsession,” that passion translates into pure sonic electricity. The track pounds with deep, commanding bass that holds everything together – it’s a sound meticulously crafted over years of studio experimentation since 2020, tweaking and perfecting until they nailed this gnarly final version.

What really makes this cover kick ass is how it flips the bird to all that polished, digital nonsense. The High Priestess and The Hierophant don’t mess around – they’re slinging hardware synths, electric guitar, and bass like they’re loaded weapons. No heavy tuning, no vocoding, none of that processed crap. Just pure vocals that hit you with real human emotion. It’s refreshing as hell in a world drowning in Auto-Tune. They’re basically saying, “Hey, we’ve got the chops and the soul – we don’t need software to sound badass.”

The whole recording went down at Audio Alchemy Studios, and man, it was pure magic. These two used MIDI sequencing to build what they’re calling an “electronic orchestra” – basically, they wrangled a bunch of hardware synths into submission, sounds that were totally their own while still giving mad respect to the original track.

While they’re holed up in the studio right now working on their debut EP for late 2025, with live shows coming in 2026, this single? It’s a straight-up statement. Lücid Lovers have taken a “sleeper classic” – one forgotten by Millennials and Gen X but ripe for Gen Z discovery – and pumped it full of new life. It bridges generations not through nostalgia, but through sheer, in-your-face energy. “Obsession” is not only a cover; it’s packed with synth hooks that’ll cut right through you, bass that’ll shake you to your core, and vocals so raw they’ll stop you in your tracks. Cleveland just dropped something seriously powerful on us. You’d better lock into their frequency.
