We spoke to Hate At First Sight about their unique blend of punk, post punk, and alternative rock influences, and how their sound has evolved since starting out in 1997. They shared some surprising stories about their songwriting process, the excitement of connecting with listeners, and stepping into new roles as a vocalist and guitarist. We also discussed their latest single, “Your View,” and their upcoming EP, Primal Directives, arriving December 15.
How would you describe your music to someone who’s never heard it?
I would say newer influences like Drug Church and Turnstile mixed with old influences like Faith No More meets PiL, with Pixies influenced solos.
How has your sound evolved since you first started making music?
When I first started in 1997, it was more straight punk stylings. I’ve always liked new wave/post punk/ 80’s rock as well. So over time, they’ve kind of blended into my current sound.
What’s a bizarre or unexpected inspiration behind one of your songs?
Sometimes tracks happen fast. Both Did You Notice and Situation Situation were recorded and completed within a four hour window.
What’s the most memorable moment of your music career so far?
Just having family and friends involved, but more than that, having people like something I did without knowing me. I’ve never really sang, played guitar, or wrote lyrics until the past year. I’ve always been more bass/drums/synth. So the fact people listen and don’t burn me down I’m happy about haha
Tell us all you can about your latest release and where and when to find it?
Current track, “your view”, is on all platforms. It’s about how sometimes people are just stuck in their frame of mind, no matter what you say or do. The EP, Primal Directives, drops 12/15.
