We spoke with Laura from Goddamn Wolves who told us everything from their Sci-fi inspirations to their newest EP called The DOOM EP. Check it out below. We are big fans and we think you will be as well. 🙂 Read on Sci-fi warriors…
How would you describe your music to someone who’s never heard it?
Goddamn Wolves’ music is a combination of our influences. It includes the male/female vocal interplay of 90’s Alternative bands like Pixies and Versus, the huge hooks and melodies of the Beatles, as well as the edginess of current indie rock bands like A Giant Dog.
How has your sound evolved since you first started making music?
We’ve become more collaborative as we’ve gotten more comfortable with each other. I am now writing and singing lead vocals regularly and overall I think we all contribute more ideas to the whole. Personally my role and focus in the band has evolved. As I’ve increased the amount of singing I do in the band, I’ve simplified my bass parts. The range of our material has also expanded. The DOOM EP includes a song called “Get Your Coat,” which is a bit country sounding and also mellower than most of our songs.
What’s a bizarre or unexpected inspiration behind one of your songs?
I love sci-fi tv shows. I will never watch a show about doctors, lawyers, police, etc., but put those same characters in space and I’m all over it. Chris and I co-wrote the lyrics for “So Long” from The DOOM EP. My verses are inspired by a post-apocalyptic show on the CW called The 100. I also have a line in one of my new songs that references Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
What’s the most memorable moment of your music career so far?
Recording is always the highlight for me. Working with Missy Thangs at the Fidelitorium was a bucket list item for sure. Missy engineered one of my favorite records – Chewin’ the Root by Pie Face Girls and is just an awesome engineer and person. Also, some of my favorite bands like Pavement and Helium have recorded at the Fidelitorium, so it was very exciting to record in the same studio they did. I’m equally excited by our ongoing relationship with Max Gowan and Found After Dark audio here in Raleigh. That has been a longer term partnership which has allowed us to get super comfortable, which opens the door to try more things and be spontaneous in the studio. Max always helps us sound our absolute best and we’re grateful to be working with him.
Tell us all you can about your latest release and where and when to find it?
Our latest release is called The DOOM EP. With attention spans being pretty short these days, we usually favor two-song singles. This time; however, all four of these songs felt like they had a common theme or feeling running through them. That theme or mood definitely ties in to our current political climate and the general feeling of dread that each of us feels in the band about the immediate future of our country and the world. The thing I really like about it though is that it’s not as straightforward as it seems. For example, Chris’ lyrics for “We’re Doomed” are actually a call to action rather than a defeatist message. You can find the EP on all of the usual streaming platforms: Spotify, Apple Music, SoundCloud, etc. as well as BandCamp. Thank you!
