We spoke to Echomatica about their dreamy indie and indietronica blend that leans cinematic and atmospheric while still touching indie pop in all the right places. They talked about how they went from acoustic cover songs to finding a distinct and emotive sound, and how some songs are secretly written about real people in their lives. Their proudest moment so far is hitting number one on Alternative Radio in New Zealand and their new release is out now on all the major streaming platforms.
How would you describe your music to someone who’s never heard it?
It’s kind of a blend…sort of a smoothie of retro indie vibes with a modern indietronica edge. We’ve been described as ‘cinematic’ because our sound tends towards the atmospheric and emotive side, but we do have a touch of indie pop here and there.
How has your sound evolved since you first started making music?
We started just fooling around on acoustic guitars, mainly just covers, and played a few shows with them before getting more seriously into songwriting, so we’re very different now from when we first got together, but it was a great opportunity to sort of figure out what we hope is a pretty distinctive sound.
What’s a bizarre or unexpected inspiration behind one of your songs?
Our singer, Charlie writes from a very personal perspective, so there are a lot of people and experiences woven in. We wear a lot of influences musically on our sleeve, but there are tracks that people probably don’t realise are actually about them, but mostly in a positive way!
What’s the most memorable moment of your music career so far?
Achieving Number 1 on Alternative Radio here in New Zealand – it means a lot because it’s home!
Tell us all you can about your latest release and where and when to find it?
It’s everywhere! Stream it on Spotify, Apple Music, Youtube or Bandcamp – we’d love to hear what listeners think!
