Most bands who try to write about “destructive romance” end up sounding like they just got dumped at a Starbucks and decided to plug in an acoustic guitar. That is not what’s happening here.

Hana Piranha just ripped the door off its hinges with “Valentine.” This thing SLAMS. This isn’t some moody bedroom pop confession. This is a predator in heels, circling you in a dimly lit room while the bass amp hums like a threat. It is indeed front-of-the-room, fist-in-the-air, speakers-at-brick-wall intensity.

And the vocals? Man. That chorus is deceptively sticky. You’ll find yourself humming it while making coffee, and then you’ll stop and go, “Wait, this song is literally about getting emotionally wrecked.” That’s the trick. Hana Piranha know exactly what they’re doing.

Well, we don’t have a full lyric sheet, but you don’t need one. You feel it. This is a song about seeing the whole tragic arc of a relationship the second you lock eyes with someone. The promise. The passion. The slow, ugly unravelling. It’s Dickens with distortion. Graham Greene with a fuzz pedal. And unlike a lot of rock bands trying to sound “deep,” Hana Piranha never get pretentious. It hits you in the chest, not the notebook.

Coming off the back of 2023’s Wingspan, this new cut from the upcoming Heart of Darkness EP shows a band that’s sharper, darker, and way more dangerous. They’ve traded restraint for tension, and it pays off in spades. “Valentine” is out everywhere now. Play it. Feel it. Just don’t pretend you didn’t see the red flags.
