You think you know what Scottish indie rock sounds like? Think again. Finlay Birch has been bubbling under the radar, getting love from BBC Radio Scotland and building that online buzz, but with “Inside Your Mind” —dropped May 22—this guy just ripped the damn volume knob clean off.

This isn’t some polite, whispery folk tune you’d hear at a coffee shop. Nah. This thing moves. From the very first hit of those live drums, you feel it in your chest. Then those swelling guitars come crashing in like a wave off the Mull coast, and suddenly you’re in a hazy, dreamlike fog that’s equal parts beautiful and unsettling.

Here’s the story: Birch wrote this three years ago in Greenock. And you can hear that small-town obsession dripping from every note. The song’s about wanting to crack someone open—get inside their skull, figure out every twisted corner—while knowing damn well you’ll never fully get there. That’s the hook. That’s the pain.

But here’s where it gets good. Birch doesn’t just leave you hanging in the intimate, quiet verses. Nah, he builds it. Layer by layer. Until the whole damn thing explodes into this widescreen finale that feels like the roof’s caving in (in the best way possible). He wanted it to feel like it was “constantly moving,” and mission freakin’ accomplished.

Now let’s talk shop. This wasn’t cut in some glossy London megastudio. Finlay Birch tracked this bad boy live between An Tobar and Mull Theatre and—get this—a barn on the Isle of Mull. And behind the board? Dylan Cooper. Yeah, the same producer who’s worked with Charli XCX, Lil Peep, and Miley Cyrus’s Ashley O project. Weird flex? Maybe. But it works. Cooper helped Birch blend indie rock, folk, and dream-pop into something that feels massive but still warm, like an old leather jacket.

Birch arranged the track with Cooper too. So this isn’t some hired-gun situation. This is personal.

Inside Your Mind” follows the singles “Weight Will Unwind” and “I Want You,” and it’s easily his most ambitious release yet. The debut album Weight Will Unwind lands June 12. Mark your calendars.
