Let’s talk about this new slab of digital defiance from Fierbinteanu. Their latest cut, “Merrymaking“, is a neon-lit, synth-powered bulldozer aimed squarely at the ivory towers.
First off, let’s meet the architects of this beautiful noise. Fierbinteanu is the brainchild of Gabriela and Cristian Fierbinteanu. These two aren’t messing around in a basement; they’re seasoned sound and video artists who’ve cut their teeth from Bucharest to Berlin, Stockholm to Reykjavik, and now they’re holed up in Brussels making what they call their “future intergalactic velvet entertainment album.”
“Merrymaking” is the follow-up to their September single “Women of the World,” and it’s a damn riot. This is a “dictators & billionaires vs. you and me” themed track. But to be clear, this isn’t some whiny, placard-waving protest song. Hell no. Cristian himself states it plainly: “It is not a protest song.” So what the hell is it? It’s about the sheer, stubborn spectacle of it all. It’s that feeling of being “so creative, and innovative” and screaming “take over billionaires!” with a smirk, knowing full well how complicated it all is. That line, “Hope springs eternal! It’s complicated, it’s what dictators can’t bear!” is pure punk rock ethos, even if it’s delivered with a sequencer.
And the whole package is tied together with that mysterious, mind-bending collage artwork from Cristi Márculescu. It looks as intriguing and layered as the song itself.
These two have already road-tested this beast live in the UK, and it went down a storm. That’s no surprise. Tracks with this much guts and groove are built for the stage, for the sweat and the crowd.
So, if you’re tired of sanitized, safe music, get on this. “Merrymaking” is a shot of adrenaline straight to the heart. It’s danceable, it’s pissed off, it’s clever, and it’s a blast. Let the merrymaking begin.
