Echomatica is kicking the door with their second track, “Something”. This Tamaki Makaurau four-piece is charging full speed toward their October 12th debut album, and if this track’s anything to go by, we’re in for one wild ride. Recorded live to analogue tape at Auckland’s Earwig Studios, “Something” absolutely rips with that energy you only get when a band’s jamming together in the same room, feeding off each other’s electricity. This isn’t some sterile, overcooked track—it’s breathing fire.

After their debut “Love Isn’t Always” tore up the charts from 95bfm to stations across the globe, Echomatica’s back with twice the attitude. “Something” shows these guys know exactly how to blend dreamy feelings with straight-up alt-rock power. The track kicks in with this fresh, breezy feel that suddenly shows its teeth. Matt Chong and AJ layer their guitars into something gorgeous and crystalline, while AJ also throws in these hazy, textured synths that just work. What you get is this sound that feels like it could’ve come from your favourite ’90s record, but it’s got serious modern bite.

You know that feeling when you want something so bad but you’re not sure if you should go for it? That’s exactly what this track nails. Charlie Maclean’s vocals – man, they’re something else. One second he’s barely whispering, pulling you in close, and then SMASH – he’s belting it out over these massive acoustic swells and electric walls of sound. The guy knows how to work a mic. The rhythm section, anchored by the formidable low-end punch of Scott Samson’s bass, provides a pulse that’s giving the whole thing this vibe that just won’t let go. It keeps pushing and pushing, like it’s got somewhere important to be. Maclean says the song is about “reaching for meaning when everything feels uncertain,” and you can feel it. There’s a tangible, electric potential in the spaces between the notes, a rock-n-roll truth in what’s left unspoken.

“Something” shows us this isn’t just another band with one decent track. These guys are the real stuff, mixing those indietronica vibes with straight-up alt-rock muscle. They’re making an announcement here, loud and clear: Echomatica’s arrived, they’re making noise, and we’re the lucky ones who get to hear it.
