Australian pop-punk outfit Annakye explores the many shades of emotion with the release of their latest single Colours. This song has a good mix of the familiar and the fresh, with the band using their wide array of influences as a palette to inform the range of emotions depicted in the song. While the pop-punk explosion was bathed in dark colors during the 90’s and the aughts, Annakye brushes outside the lines with an explosion of sounds raging from the brightness of pop, the bleakness of metal and the vibrancy of the theatrical.
Colours is inspired by the chaos that can come about in relationships. Our narrator is bathed in a whirlwind of emotions, feeling exhausted as things are constantly going wrong and they end up in the same exact situation as before. As fortunate as we are to have so many colors to work with, mixing them up can also turn the mixture into a dull gray. The band paints this ongoing loop with dynamic rhythms, alternating guitar moods and wide harmonies, making their mark in the genre.Annakye met in 2022 and are still starting out in their punk journey, but they’ve definitely found their stride. Colours proves that pop-punk endures, and they are here to put their stamp on it. We can’t wait for what they come up with next.
