Big Winner doesn’t need a band. Charles Griffin Gibson does it all himself, and “Blissin’ Out” is proof that one guy with a cheap classical guitar and a bag of sound effects can make something that hits harder than a room full of amps. This is DIY art rock from an Oslo-based filmmaker who walked away from music for five years, then got pulled back in by a second-hand guitar and a stack of dirty dishes.
The story is wild. Gibson sold all his gear in 2019 and moved to Norway with his wife. For five years, no music. Just family life, two kids, and an endless pile of oatmeal-stained bowls. Then he bought a cheap classical guitar from a neighbour, and the songs came flooding back. He set one rule for the album Dinosaur: no new gear. The only physical instruments allowed were that guitar and an egg shaker. Everything else is MIDI, freelance musicians hired through Fiverr, and a mountain of Creative Commons sound effects. He recorded most of it at his dining room table. That’s not a limitation. That’s a creative choice, and it works.
“Blissin’ Out” is the first single from that album, and it’s a weird, wonderful piece of art. The song ping-pongs between joy and dread. It’s about playing with his kids, hating his bad habits because they’re watching, and feeling like time is running out. The title of the album comes from his son’s dinosaur obsession and Gibson’s own feeling of going extinct. That’s heavy stuff, but the song doesn’t drown in it. It’s got a cheeky sense of humour. It’s got texture. The sound effects carry as much weight as any chord, and you can tell this guy edits films for a living because every sound is placed with intent.
Gibson used to write anxious songs about dating and drinking in New York. Now he writes about parenthood and getting older. That’s growth. That’s real. He treats his songs like little drawings he works on in private and then shows in a gallery. “Blissin’ Out” is out now with a music video. The album Dinosaur lands November 13. If you want rock that’s smart, strange, and deeply human, give this a spin. Big Winner is playing by his own rules, and the result is something special.
