Let’s get one thing straight: Milkie isn’t here to play by the rules, and “Crystal” is proof. This Bristol-based songwriter, real name Hannah Millie Phipps, has been pushing out tunes since she was a kid, and you can feel every bit of that history in this track. She grew up as the oldest of eight, surrounded by a family band that she lovingly describes as more Von Crapp than Von Trapp. That kind of chaos builds character, and it builds songwriters who don’t give a damn about fitting into a neat little box.
“Crystal” is a love song, but not the sappy kind. It’s about wanting everything all at once – a ring, a fling, a crystal on a string – and that weird dance we all do around the thing we already know we want. It’s sung in both English and French, which gives it this gorgeous, cross-cultural swagger. The whole thing rides on synths, samples, and a string quartet, but don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s soft. There’s a pulse here, a drive that keeps things moving.
Here’s the cool part: most of the first demo made it onto the finished record. You can still hear the original synths, guitars, and vocals that Miklie laid down at home, starting with a synth riff and the footsteps of the Madison dance. Producer Benjamin Satherley-Johnson and the band later added drums, bass, and that string quartet in the studio. Satherley-Johnson also mixed it, and Matthew Bentley mastered. The credits are stacked: Phoebe Curry on bass, piano, and stomps, Ceri Bain on drums and stomps, and a string quartet conducted by Drew Morgan. Everyone brought their A-game.
The single comes with a limited run of matchboxes, handmade by Miklie herself, stuffed with a crystal pendulum, a lyric zine that unfolds into a divination mat, and all sorts of witchy, teenage dream energy. It’s a nod to the kid who spent nights poring over Tori Amos liner notes and researching love spells on LiveJournal. She really is the same girl.
“Crystal” is out now. If you’re still waiting for a sign, this is it. Milkie delivers indie pop with teeth, and this track is a gem. Don’t sleep on it.
