San Francisco has a new voice, and she’s not afraid to get weird. Michellar—the project of songwriter Michelle Bond—just dropped “Can’t get you out of my mind,” and it’s a heady trip through the kind of psychedelic rock that made the late ’60s and early ’70s so damn memorable. This is a genuine love letter to the sounds that shaped Bond’s teenage years, and it hits with a sincerity that studio polish can’t fake.
Bond wrote the lyrics and melodies herself, pulling from a well of obsessions that she says she’s carried around for too long. The kind of thoughts you don’t say out loud, the ones that gnaw at you until you have to let them out. That’s the fuel for this track. To bring it to life, she reached out to Nashville producer Michael Beckheart, a guy who shares her passion for heavy, spaced-out textures. The two of them worked coast-to-coast: Bond laid down demos and vocals in San Francisco, while Beckheart built the instrumentals in Nashville. Then they met up in Tennessee to finish the mix and master. That bi-coastal back-and-forth gave the song a layered, almost collaborative tension that you can feel in the final cut.
The song’s theme is dark and alluring. Bond describes it as sensual escapism—a way to channel tragic, uncontrollable urges into music instead of letting them fester. It’s not a happy pop tune; it’s a confession, and that honesty gives it weight. She even jokes that “curiosity kills the cat,” but then adds, “I think we both killed it on this song.” That self-aware humour keeps the track from getting too heavy, but the emotional core is real.
This is also the first taste of a full psychedelic album due out in Spring 2027. If “Can’t get you out of my mind” is any indicator, that record is going to be a trip worth taking. Michellar isn’t touring right now, but she’s clearly focusing on the studio, and that’s fine—she’s building something substantial here.
