BLOCK just dropped “Firefly,” and this thing hit us right in the chest like a whiskey bottle thrown from the stage. This is the final stand-alone single before his new album Love Crash drops in May 2026, and holy hell, it’s a punch with a melody.

First, the man has credentials that’ll make any indie-rock snob stand up and salute. We’re talking a dude who helped launch the New York anti-folk movement back in the late 1990s. That’s right—underground cult-hero status. He’s shared air with Regina Spektor, Beck, The Moldy Peaches, and Ani DiFranco. Then he did a Glen Ballard-produced Capitol Records debut. Now? He’s on Meridian (ECR Music Group), and Rolling Stone called him “a musical wonder who challenges the conventional.” That’s not hype. That’s fact.

So what’s “Firefly” about? Grab a tissue or just punch a wall—your choice. BLOCK wrote this one for his brother Michael, who died eight years ago. But it ain’t just about Michael. It’s about every beautiful friend he lost to the disease of addiction. The ones who couldn’t pull out of that death spiral through no fault of their own. This song remembers the beauty they brought—like a carefree dance under the stars one summer night a long time ago. That’s the kind of beauty that makes rock music matter.

Who helped shape this sound? Chris Kuffner (yeah, the dude who worked with Ingrid Michaelson and Regina Spektor) produced it. Blake Morgan (Lenny Kravitz, Lesley Gore, Janita) mixed and mastered it. That’s a power trio right there. The result is a track that sits perfectly alongside BLOCK’s breakthrough singles “I Thought I Won The War”and “Over And Over.” Those set the table. This one burns the whole damn house down in the best way.

And get this—BLOCK says each song on Love Crash ended up being a rung of a ladder leading him out of a very dark place. Strange, scary time. Rich vein of heartbreak. He made it out, but just barely. That’s rock and roll, baby. No fake smiles. Just survival. “Firefly” is available to stream. You’re gonna need it.
