Sometimes a song creeps up on you like fog rolling in off the water. That’s exactly what Mars_999 delivers with “Ostrov,” the new single that landed March 7th. This isn’t your typical three-chord rock stomper; it’s something deeper, weirder, and way more interesting.
Let’s get one thing straight right now: Mars_999 isn’t playing by anybody’s rules. This project lives in the space between experimental alternative music and dark poetic storytelling, and “Ostrov” (that’s Slovak for “My Own Island”) is the perfect example of what happens when you stop caring about genres and start chasing a feeling.
The track hits you with these hypnotic, melancholic waves right from the jump. Produced by Rohinn Brown, it mixes emotive melodies with these minimalist trap-indie beats that shouldn’t work together but absolutely do. And when you’ve got Randy Merrill—yeah, that Randy Merrill—handling the mastering, you know the sonics are gonna be pristine. The guy’s a legend, and his touch gives this track a polished, atmospheric weight that pulls you under.
But here’s where it gets really stimulating. The vocals come at you in Slovak, minimal and mysterious. The lyrics are sparse but they land like punches:
“Come with me. To the island. Please, no words. We will be with the dark. While only low blood flows in our veins. Heaven and hell can only watch. Do you hear?”
That’s it. That’s the whole confession. And it cuts deep. Isolation. Inner conflict. Two people stranded together but still alone. It’s heavy gear, and the music carries that weight without ever buckling.
Visually, the project has always been about strong imagery, and the video for “Ostrov” takes it to another level. Directed by Doctorswife, with choreography from Martina Drozolova—a young Slovak dancer currently studying at the Academy of Performing Arts—the video drops you into this uncanny, slightly bizarre world.
Mars_999 keeps digging deeper into that space where relationships get messy and estrangement feels like home. This single is another chapter in that journey, and if you’re looking for something that actually makes you feel something instead of just nodding along, “Ostrov” is your island.
