Naomi Neva is dropping pure emotion with her new single, “This Is Over”. Released November 7, the Oakland-based indie rock force is about to rip a new one into the sanitised world of pop with a track that is as brutally honest as it is sonically massive. This is an emancipation proclamation screamed from the top of a stack of burning amplifiers.

Produced at the aptly named Hear Me Roar Studio by an all-female team, the track immediately establishes its credentials. “This Is Over” was literally born in the sky, scribbled down mid-flight as Neva flew home from Berlin. Reeling from an unanswered message to someone she cared about, she took all that frustration and vulnerability into lyrics while wedged in her seat. Talk about alchemy—turning the awkward, bittersweet agony of a cramped airplane into a fucking anthem? That’s the mark of a true artist. She captures that specific moment of clarity when you realize you’re never going to get what you need from someone, and the lie you tell yourself when the ties aren’t fully severed. As she puts it with stunning honesty: “It’s also a lie — I’m still friends with both of the people who inspired it, and that is still a mistake.”

“This Is Over” is the perfect storm of Naomi Neva’s signature blend: female rage, a tinge of nostalgia, and real honesty. It’s the result of a lifetime of using music as a survival tool, from writing lullabies for her sisters to spitting angry, hopeful anthems in a teenage punk band. Now, as a mother and a fully-formed artist, she’s releasing these declarations of identity and connection for the world to hear. And the world better damn well listen.
